Gary Mintz was the Principal of Brentwood High School from 1989 until his sudden death in 1995. Together with Mr. O'Brien, his successor, he had developed the idea of having a community 5k race on the morning of the scholarship pancake breakfast in December. The first attempt had only 28 runners participate.
In 1995 the race was renamed in Gary's honor.
On December 5th 2000, over 500 runners competed raising over $5,000 in scholarship money for Brentwood seniors.
More than 600 students, faculty and community members participated in the 3.1 miles run and pancake breakfast during the 21st Anniversary of the Gary Mintz Memorial Run in 2015. For the past 21 years, the 5K annual run has been a significant source of scholarship dollars for graduating seniors. Each year, the Brentwood School District works together with many local business partners and community leaders to raise scholarship money for the event.
