Gary Mintz was the Principal of Brentwood High School from 1989 until his sudden death in 1995. Together with Mr. O'Brien, his successor, he had developed the idea of having a community 5k race on the morning of the scholarship pancake breakfast in December.
 
The first attempt had only 28 runners participate. In 1995 the race was renamed in Gary's honor.

On December 5, 2000 over 500 runners competed, raising over $5,000 in scholarship money for Brentwood seniors.
